Albanian literature

The Department of Albanian Language operates within the Faculty of Philology at the University of Prishtina as an academic unit focused on the teaching of the Albanian language, translation, public communication, and conducting genuine scientific research in the field of the Albanian language and its comparison with other languages with which Albanian has continuous contact. The teaching component is the core value of the BA study program, but alongside this, the study of the Albanian language constitutes one of its significant values. In the field of linguistic research with a focus on Albanian, it also opens perspectives for further studies at the MA and PhD levels. The program is designed in such a way that the main emphasis is placed on the practical skills of using the language and on the theoretical foundation of linguistics. Meanwhile, research is linked to teaching through close cooperation between professors and students in joint research, which, among other things, aims to foster the research and creative skills of the candidates. Research in the form of critical readings and empirical studies covers various fields of linguistics, literature, and communication sciences in general. These results are presented in the form of theses, master's theses, and dissertations, but also as publications in conferences both within and outside the country. The program is built on the communication needs of contemporary Kosovar society.

Studies in the BA and MA programs offered by the Department of Albanian Language are of particular importance as they primarily offer the training of new professionals who will be engaged in teaching Albanian as a first language or as a foreign language, as well as training editors and proofreaders of the Albanian language, translators, and the preparation of young scholars in the field of Albanian studies.

Upon completion of their studies, graduates will be able to orient themselves for employment in various sectors and governmental and non-governmental organizations, in the media, in publishing houses, and in the field of education. The BA and MA programs within the Department are comparable to all programs in departments in the region and around the world that teach a language as a first language. They are dedicated to candidates who graduate from general high schools as well as from philological high schools, but also to all those who have had Albanian language and literature as a mandatory subject in their secondary education.

The Faculty has developed collaborations with numerous research, scientific, and academic institutions related to the field of Albanian studies. The Department of Albanian Language has established cooperation with various university centers in Europe, such as Prague, Berlin, Koblenz, Venice, Toruń, Zagreb, Poznań, Zadar, Copenhagen, etc., where either Albanian or other Balkan languages are studied. Additionally, the faculty has collaborations with other university centers in Europe that have departments of Balkan studies and Slavic studies, such as in Sofia, St. Petersburg, Belgrade, Skopje, etc., as well as with universities in Turkey.

The Department of Albanian Language has established and organizes, in cooperation with other departments, the International Seminar on Albanian Language, Literature, and Culture, which is the most important event in Albanian studies. In the summer of 2024, the 50th anniversary of the Seminar was celebrated. Successfully held Albanian language courses for foreign students at three levels; scientific presentations, roundtables, book promotions, and scientific lectures from the field of Albanian studies by prominent figures in Albanian studies from both the country and abroad, among other activities.

In 2023, the Department of Albanian Language conducted a study visit to the Arbëresh villages in Sicily, within the framework of the project "Narratives in the Arbëresh Communities of Sicily in Italy." As part of this project, a documentary was produced that presents the linguistic situation of these Arbëresh villages today. The project was supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Over the years, professors of the Department of Albanian Language have published scientific papers in their respective fields, indexed on the Scopus platform (see the professors' digital CVs). Other works are in the process of publication.

Currently, the Department has eight full-time lecturers and one assistant.
