Albanian language
The Department of Albanian Language at the Faculty of Philology, University of Prishtina, operates as an academic unit focused on teaching the Albanian language, translation, public communication, and conducting genuine scientific research in the field of the Albanian language and its comparison with other languages with which Albanian has continuous contact. The teaching component is the main value of the BA study program, but alongside it, the study of the Albanian language also represents one of its key values, especially in linguistic research, with a focus on Albanian, which opens perspectives for further studies at the MA and PhD levels. The program is designed in such a way that the main emphasis of the training is placed on the practical skills of language use and on the theoretical foundation of linguistics. Meanwhile, research is closely linked to teaching through the close cooperation of professors and students in joint research, aiming at fostering the candidates' research and creative skills. Research in the form of critical readings and empirical studies covers various areas of linguistics, literature, and communication sciences in general. These results are presented in the form of theses, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations, as well as publications in conferences both within and outside the country. The program is built based on the communication needs of today's Kosovar society.
Studies in the BA and MA programs offered by the Department of Albanian Language are of particular importance as they primarily provide the training of new cadres who will engage in teaching Albanian as a first or foreign language, Albanian language editors and proofreaders, translators, and the preparation of young Albanian language scholars.
Upon completion of their studies, graduates will be able to orient themselves towards employment in various sectors and governmental and non-governmental organizations, in the media, publishing houses, and the education sector. The BA and MA programs within the Department are comparable to all programs in departments across the region and the world that teach a language as a first language. They are dedicated to candidates graduating from general high schools as well as from philological high schools, but also to all those who have had compulsory Albanian language and literature courses in high school.
The Faculty has developed collaborations with numerous research, scientific, and academic institutions related to the field of Albanian studies. The Department of Albanian Language has established partnerships with various universities in Europe, such as Prague, Berlin, Koblenz, Venice, Toruń, Zagreb, Poznań, Zadar, Copenhagen, etc., where either Albanian or other Balkan languages are studied. Additionally, the faculty also collaborates with other university centers in Europe that have departments of Balkan studies and Slavic studies, such as in Sofia, St. Petersburg, Belgrade, Skopje, etc., as well as with universities in Turkey.
The Department of Albanian Language has established and organizes, in cooperation with other departments, the International Seminar on Albanian Language, Literature, and Culture, which is the most important event in Albanian studies. In the summer of 2024, the 50th anniversary of the Seminar was celebrated. Successful Albanian language courses for foreign students at three levels have been held, scientific presentations, roundtables, book promotions, and scientific lectures from the field of Albanian studies by distinguished figures in Albanian studies from both the country and abroad.
In 2023, the Department of Albanian Language carried out a study visit to the Arbëresh villages in Sicily, Italy, within the framework of the project "Narratives in the Arbëresh Communities of Sicily." A documentary was created as part of this project, which presents the linguistic situation of these Arbëresh villages today. The project was supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Over the years, the professors of the Department of Albanian Language have published scientific papers in their respective fields of study indexed on the Scopus platform (see digital CVs of professors). Other papers are in the process of publication.
Currently, the Department has eight full-time lecturers and one assistant.
